Useful to know before reinstalling a sound card “SoundMAX ADI 1986a”.

The sound card SoundMAX ADI 1986a is included within the ASUS mother board. Neither Knoppix (a popular Linux distrib) nor Windows XP detect it. Yet, any geek will install it on Linux ;-). The issue is harder with Windows.

Of course, on changing the mother board, the operating system need be re-installed. A driver CD is provided with the mother card. But the sound card drivers are denied the right to install, likely because of hardware configuration detection.

After many tries (format C:, boot in safe mode, boot on USB, boot on CD…), the solution is the following:

  • install the mother board
  • install Windows XP and the drivers needed, except the sound card ones.
  • upgrade Windows XP to SP2
  • install the drivers of the SoundCard from the CD provided by ASUS.

Normally it should be OK. It was the first time I had to install the drivers after upgrading to SP2 :-/. I do not know whether this is the normal process.
