Firefox 2.0
Some problems to install and a few improvements, but nothing revolutionary
I have used FireFox since it was still FireBird. I was not looking forward to installing the 2.0 release, mainly because most of improvements come along with it were already available via extensions I have, such as SessionSaver.
Nonetheless, this morning I have decided to install it on my Windows partition. For the first time since FireFox is my default browser, I encountered problems: the bookmark manager did not work:
- my former bookmarks were lost
- impossible to add or handle bookmarks with the bookmark manager.
As a good Open Source software user, I will send a bug report to Mozilla 😉
So, what’s up with this new version?
- new theme: well I prefer the former one 😛
- improved table browsing, session restore: as already said above, both features were available with XPI extensions. But extensions are also aimed at innovating and add features, aren’t they? 😉
- spell checking: I thought I would not use it, but… It is very useful, so why restraining?
- RSS handling: it was improved, now the management is very efficient. I love it!
- search engine manager: this is another good improvement. From now and then, adding, removing and shifting search engines is easy. No more need to enter in config files! 🙂 I have already Wiktionary search engine.
- may other features were added, but so far I have not yet tasted them.
Nonetheless, sometimes I still feel memory leaks :-(.
So, to conclude, I will say this new version brings nothing really innovating, as FireFox 1.0 did. But I think it is worth installing it, all the more for people who still obsolete Web Browser such as Internet Explorer 6 (even though the 7th was released, I have not yet installed it ; I will. I use FireFox because it is the best browser, and not because of political or theological view point, that’s all).
So: download it!
